Barack Obama, the 44th president of the USA from 2009 to 2017, quit smoking shortly before his presidency in 2007. Obama had been smoking since a teenager and struggled with the addiction. He promised to quit before he became president, however, he admitted that he slipped up a few times due to the stress of the job. To try and overcome his addiction, he chewed on nicotine chewing gum.
During his presidency, Obama passed the ‘Tobacco Bill’ to try and prevent young generations from smoking. The law forbids tobacco companies from advertising products, such as sweetened cigarettes to children.
Jon Stewart has been very open about his nicotine and cigarette addiction over the years. The actors started smoking at the age of 15 and kicked the habit in 2000. He stated “I used cigarettes to fill a void. It was an activity that I did to make myself feel better.” To help him get over the habit, he replaced it with chewing gum.
After many years of not smoking, Jon Stewart has stated that he has seen huge improvements in his life, saying that he feels better for it and his health has improved.
Gisele Bundchen, like many other young models, used smoking to curb hunger and replace meals to stay slim. However, the model quit in 2003 to try and live a healthier, happier lifestyle and become a better person for young women to look up to. Her diet consisted of a bottle of red wine, many cups of coffee and a pack of cigarettes every day.
The model has stated that exercise, like yoga, running and meditation, was the many reasons she managed to stay on track.
Michael Douglas suffered greatly from the effects of smoking cigarettes. In 2011, the actor had a cancerous tumour in his throat, which doctors put down to alcoholism and smoking. After receiving the right treatment, Mihalse Douglas quit smoking and vowed to live a healthier lifestyle.
Jennifer Anniston, a movie and TV star best known for her role as Rachael in ‘Friends’ quit smoking in 2007 after years of chain-smoking. The actress decided that she wanted to change her life for the better, so vowed to quit caffeine and nicotine. She did this by cleansing her body, exercising and eating better. The actress states that yoga helped her kick the bad habit and stay on track.
Friend’s co-star Courtney Cox also managed to quit smoking by going to hypnotherapy sessions (using the same therapist that Drew Barrymore went to).
Keith Richards, rock and roll superstar and lead guitarist of the ‘Rolling Stones’ quit smoking in 2019 after chain-smoking for decades. The guitarist had suffered from many addictions throughout the years, including alcohol and drugs. He publically agreed with Lou Reed’s statement that “nicotine was harder to quit than heroin.”
The rock legend quit smoking by gradually cutting down how many cigarettes he would smoke until he completely gave up.
Paul Rudd, a movie and TV star actor, smoked for many years. The actor finally kicked the habit by going through hypnotherapy sessions. The sessions used the Kerry Gaynor Method, which was developed in LA.
Lady Gaga, one of the most famous singers of the 10s, stated that “I’m not smoking anymore, but I’d smoke 40 cigarettes all day long.” She decided to go ‘cold turkey’ and never looked back. However, she went back to smoking a few times before going all the way. She also said “If you don’t smoke, don’t smoke! Because quitting is worse. It is so brutal.
